Are air source heat pumps noisy?
Air source heat pumps are considered low to moderate when it comes to the noise they produce. They do make some whirring noise while running, similar to an air conditioner, however for most customers, the noise is not really noticeable around usual daily life, especially with other appliances such as ovens and extractor fans working as well. Much like the noise of your dishwasher, you will likely get used to the hum quickly and begin not to notice it at all after a few days.
The sound level produced by an air source heat pump is 40 – 60 decibels from 1m away, though that would only happen if the pump is working really hard. 40 decibels is equal roughly to an extractor fan, refrigerator or a babbling brook. 60 decibels sounds like the background noise in a restaurant, hair clippers or a normal conversation volume.
Air source heat pumps are installed outside, and the noise levels are not disruptive to your household or your neighbours. Often, traffic noises will be louder than the pump even when working at 60 decibels.
Indoors, heat pumps are usually quieter than gas boilers when running. All heating systems will make some noise, though where they are installed and how much noise they produce can differ depending of each situation. Your air source heat pump can be installed away from any quiet areas if needed, but it is best to speak to our team and find out your options if this would be beneficial to you as they are best placed to advise.
How to reduce the noise an air source heat pump makes
There are products you can buy to reduce the noise if needed, which may help if you have a much older heat pump as they can be a little noisier. The compressor inside the unit is what creates the noise, and this can be quietened with a noise-reducing blanket fitted by an engineer. This works exactly as it sounds; wrapping around the compressor to reduce the sound escaping.

Considering Heat Pumps?
If you think air source heat pumps are the right option for you, or your just not sure whether they would work in your home, get in touch with our heat pump experts and have a chat.
Heat pumps reduce carbon emissions whilst providing permanent heat that can be used for radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water. They are ideal for well insulated properties, regardless of the age of your home and our engineers will design a solution specifically to maximise the efficiencies for your particular property. Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could also be entitled to a grant to cover part of the costs of replacing your existing fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump.
Our team are dedicated to adding value to every project and our expert team take care of every aspect of the installation to give you peace of mind. We are passionate about combining our knowledge and experience with high quality products and excellent customer service to deliver specialist solutions.
