Installation of a multi-tech renewable energy solution, York

A bespoke multi-tech approach using two heat pumps, a pool heat exchanger and solar PV.

Project Overview

Pure Renewables were engaged to design a solution to replace an inefficient and unreliable oil boiler system (with high opex costs), whilst also providing heat during the summer to a new outdoor pool being built at the property.

The property was a large 6,700ft² Edwardian house which had a previous ‘deep’ renovation (back to brick) and a large extension to the rear. It had underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators to first and second floors. All windows were new double-glazed sash window.

The Solution

Our in-house design team engineered a solution which included:

  • Two 14.3kW Stiebel Eltron WPL25 heat pumps (total output 18.6kW) married to a 500ltr domestic hot water (DHW) tank and 400ltr buffer tank (to regulate the heating).
  • 40kW pool heat exchanger installed in the pool plant room – connected to heat pump buffer by pre-insulated pipe.
  • 25kWp solar PV installed on the garage block to offset incoming grid electricity, thereby creating an extremely efficient pool heating system.

Performance

The heat pumps can be remotely monitored via their Internet Service Gateway (ISG), which is showing an efficiency of 4.09 (i.e. 1kW of electricity provides 4.09kW of heat). This included 3 winter/spring months as well as heating the outdoor pool from cold (circa 10’C to 29’C).
