Solar Panel Service and Maintenance
Pure Renewables, a leading renewable energy solutions installer, provides solar panel service and maintenance for commercial properties.
The Importance of Solar Panel Maintenance
Many businesses choose to install a commercial solar PV energy system to help reduce energy bills and future proof the company against further increases in the cost of electricity. However, once the system is installed, it’s important to carry out regular solar panel service and maintenance to optimise the performance of the system.
During a solar panel service and maintenance visit, there are a number of tests completed. The Pure Renewables team will complete electrical testing of the DC wiring and functional tests of the DC isolators as well as a visual inspection on the system for wear and tear or signs of thermal damage. There will be a system check through the inverter report log to make sure there are no faults present inside the inverter logs and a yearly report provided to document the results, which gives the ability to cross reference each year to see if there is a decline in performance and to rectify any issues.
Key Reasons to Carry out Solar Panel Service and Maintenance
At Pure Renewables, we believe there are six key reasons to carry out solar panel service and maintenance:
Performance
Efficiency Drops Over Time: Dirt, dust, bird droppings, leaves, and other debris can accumulate on solar panels, reducing their efficiency. Regular cleaning and inspection ensure they can absorb sunlight effectively.
Inverter Check: Inverters, which convert the DC electricity generated by the panels into usable AC electricity, are a critical component. They are more prone to issues than the panels themselves, and regular testing ensures they are working correctly.
Safety Concerns
Electrical Safety: Solar PV systems involve high-voltage electricity. Regular inspections are necessary to check for loose connections, exposed wires, or wear and tear in the electrical system, which could otherwise lead to electrical hazards or even fires.
Structural Integrity: Mounting systems, frames, and wiring are exposed to weather elements. Inspecting these components helps prevent damage, which could compromise safety or performance.
System Longevity
Component Wear: While solar panels have long lifespans (often 20–25 years), other components like inverters, wiring, and batteries (in storage systems) have shorter lifespans and may require periodic replacement or repair. Regular maintenance helps extend the overall system lifespan.
Corrosion or Weather Damage: Components can deteriorate due to corrosion or weather exposure. Early detection of minor damage can prevent larger, costlier repairs in the future.
Warranty and Compliance
Warranty Requirements: Many manufacturers require regular maintenance to keep warranties valid. Yearly inspections can provide the documentation needed to ensure compliance with these warranties.
Preventive Problem Detection
Early Fault Detection: Maintenance and testing can identify issues before they become major problems, such as microcracks in the panels, degraded wiring, or malfunctioning components. This prevents larger breakdowns and costly repairs.
Animal Interference: Small animals like birds or rodents can interfere with wiring or damage the panels. Regular checks can identify and mitigate such issues early.
Energy Production Tracking
Energy Yield Monitoring: Regular checks help monitor the energy output of the system and compare it to expected performance. If the system isn’t producing as much energy as it should, maintenance can identify and fix underperforming components, like panels or inverters.
