Air Source Heat Pumps for Old Properties
We asked our heat pump experts to give us all the details regarding air source heat pumps for old properties and hopefully you’ll find the answers to your questions below. If you would like to discuss your property or find out more about suitability for an air source heat pump, please get in touch and speak to one of our heat pump experts.
Air source heat pumps have been in the news a lot recently, revered as the next big thing for eco-friendly heating solutions. As a relatively new concept to the UK, there is still some confusion over where an air source heat pump would be efficient and where it would be best to find another solution.
Many people think air source heat pumps don’t work for older properties, or would not produce the required amount of heat to keep your home warm enough throughout the colder months. While it is true that sometimes an older, less insulated property requires more careful planning, it is absolutely still an option, and a great one! With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of up to £7,500 to go towards the cost, now is a great time to be looking at alternative heating options for your property no matter which solution you opt for.
The benefits of installing an air source heat pump in an older property
Alongside the benefits of installing an air source heat pump in general, such as reduced heating costs and greener living, older properties can benefit from the systems in other unique ways:
They help with damp problems
Many properties that were built before modern techniques and materials became widespread suffer from damp problems. It is usually advised to keep your heating on a low but constant setting to avoid this, which many people in the UK struggle to do due to the cost of heating and the lack of insulation in their homes. An air source heat pump system is designed to do just that; provide a constant controlled temperature throughout. This means that rather than the constant hot/cold of a gas boiler system that is on and off throughout the day (and possibly off all day when you’re out), your room will maintain a warmer temperature and avoid the cold, dampness that causes issues. Coupled with an underfloor heating system, the benefits of this are maximised.
Inside space saving
Another great benefit of the air source heat pump is the location of the pump itself, as they are installed outside of the property. Many older properties have plenty of outside space or recesses outside of kitchens / down the side of the property, which is perfect for the installation and doesn’t interfere with the look of your home. Spaces for hot water tanks will already be planned out in many of the properties also, as they were common before combi-boilers became popular. This minimises disruption and costs for the installation.

Air source heat pump FAQs
DO YOU NEED TO ADD INSULATION FOR AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?
In order for any property to benefit fully from a heating system (of any variety, gas boiler or residential heat pump included), it should be as insulated as possible to ensure all heat is kept inside. Air source heat pumps are no different, and so insulation is something we would always consider when discussing installing a heat pump for you. Up until May 2024, in order to get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for a new air source heat pump, you were required to ensure your insulation met the requirements outlined in your properties EPC rating with no advisories to improve. This has been a blocker for some customers with older properties who are unable to improve their insulation and therefore couldn’t benefit from the grant.
As of 1st May 2024, this is no longer the case as the requirement is being lifted from the criteria. If you’ve previously been rejected for the grant, now is a great time to reapply, you could receive a grant of up to £7,500!
DO YOU NEED NEW RADIATORS FOR AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?
Air source heat pumps work by producing a steady flow of warmth through your radiators. This is the same as gas systems, though typically the heat from a gas system is hotter for shorter periods. Similar to comparing a hot oven to a slow cooker; both will produce the same cooked meal in the end. In some older houses, larger radiators may be required to ensure adequate heating and efficiency from your air source heat pump depending on the size and metal type of your current radiators, and the size of your rooms.
While assessing your property, we will be able to let you know if your radiators should be updated, though this isn’t a requirement and your new heat pump system will still work well until you’re able to make the switch. Many customers choose to wait a while before upgrading their radiators to reduce installation costs, and still benefit from their air source heat pump in the meantime. While thinking about your upgrade, if you decide to go ahead with it, consider aluminium radiators as they are always more efficient for any heating system.
As an alternative to larger radiators, air source heat pumps work really well with underfloor heating systems. Underfloor heating works like a huge radiator made from pipes under your flooring, producing heat at a lower temperature but covering your whole room.
HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED FOR AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?
They don’t require much maintenance at all, especially compared to a gas boiler that should be serviced once per year. They have long lifespans (25 years +) and will need services every few years.

ARE THERE ANY GRANTS TO HELP BUY AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP OR GET ONE FOR FREE?
For homeowners looking to update a residential heating system, the Governments Boiler Upgrade Scheme can cover up to £7,500 of the cost. Air source heat pumps generally cost between £8,500 and £12,000 so the grant offers a significant discount. It is offered by the government and does not need to be repaid. You can find out more on the gov.uk website page.
Commercial or industrial heat pump installations can also benefit from support with the cost, though the process is different. Grants and loans are often at the discretion of local councils, though there are some useful nationwide schemes. You can find out more using this funding finder on the gov.uk website.
